Introduction- The Next Phase of Digital Verification
If you thought completing KYC (Know Your Customer) for your bank, Aadhaar, or PAN was the end of compliance hassles — think again. The government has rolled out another verification process called KYV – Know Your Vehicle, mandatory for all FASTag users from October 31, 2025.
While the intent is to ensure authenticity and prevent misuse of FASTags, the implementation has left millions of vehicle owners frustrated due to technical glitches, app failures, and lack of clarity.

What is KYV (Know Your Vehicle)?
The KYV process is designed to validate that your FASTag belongs to the correct vehicle and owner.
It involves uploading key documents and photos so the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) can verify ownership through the VAHAN database — India’s centralized vehicle registry.
Documents Required for KYV Verification
To complete the process, users need to submit:
- Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC)
- Vehicle Registration Number (VRN)
- Chassis Number
- Clear photographs of the vehicle (front, back, and number plate)
- FASTag ID (visible and readable)
The process aims to eliminate fake or duplicate FASTags and ensure that toll deductions are made only from the rightful owner’s account.
Why Was KYV Introduced?
Over the years, several issues have surfaced with FASTag usage:
- Misuse of FASTags across multiple vehicles
- Fraudulent resale or duplication of tags
- Toll leakage and revenue mismatches
- Unverified accounts linked to non-existent or stolen vehicles
To curb these challenges, the government has made KYV mandatory so that:
- Each tag is mapped to a specific vehicle
- Ownership is cross-verified with official databases
- Toll data remains transparent and auditable
However, much like the early rollout of KYC, the KYV process has been marred by confusion and poor execution.
Objective Behind KYV
The primary goal of KYV is to:
- Eliminate duplicate or fraudulent FASTags
- Prevent misuse by unauthorized users
- Ensure toll revenue transparency
- Facilitate accurate linkage between vehicle data and financial transactions
However, despite its noble purpose, the rollout has been plagued with confusion and inefficiency.
The Process — On Paper vs. In Reality
On Paper:
The process seems simple:
- Log in to your FASTag issuer’s app (bank or payment wallet).
- Upload RC and photos of the vehicle.
- Verify details and submit for authentication.
In Reality:
The experience has been anything but smooth:
- App Crashes & Upload Failures – Users report multiple failed attempts to upload photos or documents.
- OTP & Backend Issues – Even after completing uploads, verification often gets stuck due to server or OTP errors.
- Multiple Account Linking Problems – Vehicles with co-owners or different bank-linked FASTags face rejection due to mismatch errors.
In short, what was meant to be a digital convenience has turned into a technical nightmare.
₹1,200 Crore Locked in FASTags
According to estimates, nearly ₹1,200 crore is currently locked in inactive FASTag wallets due to KYV non-compliance.
Each FASTag carries an average balance of ₹200 — and with over 6 crore FASTags issued, the financial impact is significant.
This has also led to:
- Travel disruption at toll plazas
- Drivers paying double tolls in cash
- Customer complaints piling up with banks and NHAI helpdesks
What Vehicle Owners Should Do Now
To avoid FASTag deactivation and travel disruptions, vehicle owners should act before the deadline.
Step-by-Step Action Plan:
- Identify your FASTag issuer bank (SBI, HDFC, Paytm, ICICI, etc.).
- Log in to the official app or portal.
- Find the “KYV Update” or “Vehicle Verification”
- Upload the RC, vehicle photos, and FASTag ID.
- Confirm details and submit for verification.
- Retain acknowledgment or screenshots for proof.
- Check FASTag status regularly to ensure activation.
For fleet operators or logistics businesses, assigning a single compliance officer to manage KYV updates for all vehicles is advisable.
Conclusion
While KYV aims to strengthen the authenticity of India’s digital toll ecosystem, its rollout exposes deep gaps between policy design and on-ground execution.
A smoother, unified, and citizen-friendly digital interface is the need of the hour. Otherwise, Know Your Vehicle may soon feel more like “Know Your Vexation.”
