Filing your Income Tax Return (ITR) is often viewed as the final step in fulfilling your annual financial obligations. However, under the updated guidelines of the Income Tax Department, uploading your return on the portal is only half the journey. The critical second half is completing your ITR verification.

Under the current 30 day ITR verification rule, taxpayers are given a strict 30-calendar-day window from the time of submission to verify their tax returns. If you fail to verify your ITR within this timeframe, the Income Tax Department treats your submission as completely invalid—as if you never filed your return at all.

What is the 30-Day ITR Verification Rule?

In the past, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) allowed taxpayers a generous 120-day window to complete ITR verification after submitting their returns. However, to accelerate tax return processing, speed up tax refund disbursements, and enhance overall digital tax compliance, the CBDT revised this window down to 30 days.

What Happens If ITR Is Not Verified Within 30 Days?

Ignoring or forgetting your ITR verification leads to serious statutory and financial penalties. Knowing what happens if ITR is not verified within 30 days can save you from unexpected tax notices and monetary losses.

1. Return Marked as Invalid (Non-est) : The Income Tax Department considers your return “never filed.”

2. Late Fees Under Section 234F : You must file a belated return, attracting late fees up to ₹5,000 (or ₹1,000 if total income is below ₹5 Lakhs).

3. Stuck Tax Refunds : Tax refunds cannot be processed or credited until a valid, verified return exists.

4. Interest Charges Under Section 234A : Penal interest of 1% per month applies to any outstanding tax liability calculated from the original due date.

5. Loss of Benefit to Carry Forward Losses : Business, speculative, or capital losses cannot be carried forward to offset future gains if the return expires.

Failing to e-verify ITR forms on time effectively resets your progress, forcing you to re-file as a belated tax filer.

How to E-Verify ITR Online: Step-by-Step Methods

The Income Tax Department provides multiple fast, digital, and secure methods to e-verify ITR forms without needing paper documents.

Method 1: How to E-Verify ITR Using Aadhaar OTP Step by Step

This is the fastest and most convenient method used by millions of taxpayers across India:

  1. Log In: Access the official e-filing website or sign in to your Apkireturn dashboard.
  2. Select e-Verify: Go to the ‘e-Verify Return’ option under ‘Quick Links’ or ‘Services’.
  3. Choose Option: Select “I would like to verify using OTP on Mobile number registered with Aadhaar”.
  4. Generate Code: Click ‘Generate OTP’. A 6-digit One-Time Password will be sent to the phone number linked to your Aadhaar card.
  5. Enter & Submit: Type the OTP into the box and click ‘Validate’.
  6. Confirmation: You will immediately receive a success message and an acknowledgment page confirming your ITR verification is complete.

Method 2: Electronic Verification Code (EVC) via Net Banking

If your Aadhaar is not updated with your current mobile number, Net Banking provides a direct, secure alternative:

  1. Select ‘Through Net Banking’ on the e-verification page.
  2. Select your bank from the authorized list and log into your online banking portal.
  3. Locate the ‘Income Tax E-Filing’ tab within your bank portal.
  4. Click the link to be redirected seamlessly back to the tax portal with your ITR automatically verified.

Method 3: EVC via Bank Account or Demat Account

Taxpayers can pre-validate their bank account or Demat account on the e-filing portal:

  1. Choose ‘Through Bank Account / Demat Account’.
  2. The system generates an EVC sent directly to your registered mobile number and email.
  3. Enter the code on the portal to finalize the process.

Method 4: Physical ITR-V Submission (CPC Bengaluru)

If you cannot complete the digital process online, you can submit your return manually:

  1. Download Form ITR-V (Acknowledgment) from the portal.
  2. Print the form in clear black ink and sign it in blue ink.
  3. Mail the physical document strictly via Speed Post

How to Verify Income Tax Return After 30 Day Limit

If you missed the deadline due to genuine reasons, there is a legal mechanism to recover your submission: submitting a Condonation of Delay Request.

Steps to Submit Condonation of Delay:

  1. Log into your account on the e-filing portal.
  2. Navigate to ‘Services’ $\rightarrow$ ‘Condonation Request’.
  3. Select ‘Delay in submission of ITR-V / e-Verification’ and click ‘Continue’.
  4. Select your filing details for the relevant Assessment Year.
  5. State the reason for delay from the drop-down menu (e.g., medical emergency, technical glitches, non-receipt of OTP, or personal distress).
  6. Submit the request.

Once the assessing officer reviews and approves your condonation request, the e-verify ITR link becomes active again, allowing you to complete your verification without filing from scratch.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. Is the 30-day verification rule applicable to revised returns?

Yes. Every revised return generated during income tax e-filing replaces the previous filing and must be verified fresh within 30 days of submission.

Q2. How can I check if my ITR e-verification was successful?

Log into your portal or check your Apkireturn account status. Go to ‘View Filed Returns’. If the status reads “Return Successfully e-Verified” or “Processed”, your verification is complete.

Q3. Can I send my signed ITR-V form through private courier services?

No. The Centralized Processing Center (CPC) in Bengaluru explicitly rejects documents delivered via private courier services or hand delivery. You must use Speed Post provided by India Post.
