The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a statutory body established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which consolidates various acts & orders that have hitherto handled food-related issues in various Ministries and Departments. FSSAI has been created for laying down science-based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import, ensuring availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption. Food businesses in India must obtain a license or registration from FSSAI to operate. The type of license depends on the scale of the business and the nature of its activities.
Based on the size and nature of your business, determine whether you need basic FSSAI registration (for small businesses) or a state/central license. Small-scale food organisations having annual Turnover of up to Rs. 12 lakhs are eligible for FSSAI registration as otherwise they need to go for License.
Visit the FSSAI’s official website and choose the appropriate form (Form A for registration and Form B for state and central licensing). Fill out the form with accurate business details.
Along with the application form, upload the required documents. Make sure all documents are valid and up-to-date.
After submitting the application online, pay the required fee for registration or licensing. The fee varies depending on the type of registration or license.
Once the application is submitted, it might be inspected by FSSAI officials. The authorities may visit your business location to check if the operations comply with the FSSAI guidelines.
After successful verification and approval of your application, the FSSAI registration certificate or license will be issued. This certificate/license will contain your FSSAI number and the logo, which should be prominently displayed at the place of business.
FSSAI licenses and registrations need to be renewed periodically, as they have a validity period ranging from 1 to 5 years. Ensure that you apply for renewal before the expiry date. Also, comply with the FSSAI regulations and guidelines for food safety post-registration.

FSSAI registration legitimizes a business, ensuring it adheres to the laws and regulations set by the FSSAI. It provides a legal advantage, particularly in case of any disputes or legal actions.
An FSSAI license enhances the credibility of a business. It assures customers that the food products are safe to consume and meet the quality standards set by the authority.
With increasing consumer awareness about food safety and quality, an FSSAI license helps in building trust among consumers. It signals that the business prioritizes food safety and is committed to offering quality products.
For businesses looking to expand in new markets or trade internationally, having an FSSAI license is often a prerequisite. It facilitates easier business expansion and entry into new markets.
Businesses can use the FSSAI logo on their products, which can be a powerful marketing tool. The logo communicates to consumers that the food adheres to the standard quality and safety norms.
Registered businesses are more likely to receive financial support from banks and investors. Additionally, they might qualify for government loans and funding opportunities.
FSSAI registration ensures that the business is compliant with the food safety and standard laws. This reduces the risk of legal complications and heavy penalties associated with non-compliance.
Compliance with FSSAI standards often leads to improvements in the quality of food products, which can drive customer satisfaction and repeat business.
