How to calculate HRA in India?

There is no such formula to calculate HRA, however, three amounts need to be considered to calculate HRA:

Example:

Let’s understand better with the help of an example.

Suppose,

  • Basic salary = ₹60,000 per month
  • HRA Received = ₹30,000 per month
  • Rent Paid = ₹25000 per month
  • City = Mumbai (Metro City)

Now, to calculate HRA based on three amounts:

  • Actual HRA Received = ₹30,000
  • 50% of the Basic Salary (as the city of residence is the metro city) = 50% of ₹60,000 = ₹30,000
  • Rent paid minus 10% of Basic Salary = ₹25000 – (10% of ₹60,000) = ₹25000 – ₹6000 = ₹19,000

Therefore, the exempted HRA amount is ₹19,000 per month.
