Permanent Account Number (PAN)

Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a unique identifier issued to all judicial entities identifiable under the Indian Income Tax Act, 1961. PAN is essential for all financial transactions such as receiving taxable salary or professional fees, sale or purchase of assets, trading in securities and more. It serves as an important proof of identification.

Permanent Account Number Details

The Permanent Account Number (PAN) follows a specific format, exemplified as ABCTY1234D. In this structure, the initial three characters, such as ‘ABC’, are an alphabetical series that can vary from AAA to ZZZ. The fourth character of the PAN, for instance, ‘T’ in the example, indicates the status of the PAN holder. Different alphabets denote different entities: ‘T’ stands for Trust, ‘F’ is used for Firm, ‘H’ signifies HUF (Hindu Undivided Family), ‘P’ represents an Individual, ‘C’ indicates a Company and so on.
